Stonehenge Playlist 07-31-09

Our mission to shine a light in the dark and often-ignored nooks and crannies of classic rock led us to play the 4th LP from Love, from 1969, 'Four Sail' by Love. Were we to tow the line usually maintained by lazy music critics, we'd all accept that Love essentially ceased to be of interest following the majestic 'Forever Changes', but Arthur Lee was far from finished. He was still in fine form on this LP, which featured an entirely new band backing him. Apparently, this new group recorded 3 albums worth of new Arthur Lee material, and this LP featured Elektra records' favorites from the bunch.

Here's one of my favorite tunes from this excellent album, 'I'm with You':

The 40th anniversary of the eponymous debut album from Yes was celebrated this week. Yes is a group that must surely have had many other 'combos' of the time quivering in their desert boots: their skills were so far beyond the majority of their peers, and they were already a 'supergroup' of sorts, with so many members already been in notable UK groups of the time.

Here's some superb footage of the original Yes line-up live in 1969 in France being introduced by some psychedelic air stewardesses?:

This week's Classic Rock Album (played from beginning to end at 8pm every Friday in case you didn't already know...) continued our work to celebrate the weekly 40th anniversary of a great album from 1969. This week it was the turn of Pink Floyd and their 'Soundtrack from the Film More', an artsy French film directed by Barbet Schroeder. It was the Floyd's third LP, and their first without any trace of Syd.

Here's an oh-so sixties clip from that movie, featuring the Floyd in a gentle mood. Note the 'Blood Sweat and Tears' LP (a C.R.A. from 2005) being put to good use:

Stonehenge Playlist 07-03-09

YES, I am finally updating the blog! Who knew that we'd take a 6 month blogging haitus... If you have been returning to this site to get our playlists from recent weeks, we can only apologise, and promise you we'll be catching up this month to be back on the right track and posting up-to-date weekly tracklistings by February, all being well.

So, come with me back in time to Independence Day 2009... I was actually out for this Show, as I was doing a 2-night stand with Judi Chicago and Noot d' Noot at Smith's Olde Bar in honour of the holiday. However, the Dr. was in (with TVS), and treated us to a 'Monster' Set of the finest rock music.

The classic rock album of the week was Steppenwolf's 'Monster', so here's some period footage of the band in action with 'Monster' (apparently at the Playboy Mansion?!?!).
