This week's classic rock album was the excellent 2nd LP from Faust released in 1972 entitled 'So Far'. Here's some really cool footage of the band in 1971, around the time of their 1st LP. So good!

Faust (or a permutation thereof) just put a new LP out last year entitled 'Something Dirty' and it's great. What a cool bunch.

This week's classic album was the sole LP from the supergroup (of sorts) Khan, entitled 'Space Shanty', and released in 1972. Khan featured members of Gong, Egg, the Crazy World of Arthur Brown, Uriel, etc. Hard working chaps!

The Classic Rock LP this week goes by a couple of different names: the debut LP from Procol Harum, it was recorded in 1967 between their first single (a little known ditty entitled 'A Whiter Shade of Pale') and their second single, but it was held back for release until 1968. In the UK it was released as 'Procol Harum', but in the USA it was named 'A Whiter Shade of Pale' (with the aforementioned big hit included). We played the US version, for kicks.

This week's classic rock album (played from beginning to end, kicking off the show every week at 8pm) was the little-known but spectacular eponymous LP from the UK band Fuzzy Duck, originally released in a pressing of just 500 copies in 1971, and subsequently reissued to critical acclaim in the 1990s.

Fuzzy Duck featured bassist Mick Hawksworth, who had previously performed with future Atomic Rooster member John Du Cann in Five Day Week Straw People and Andromeda (where they were joined by Fuzzy Duck's vocalist/guitarist Grahame White). Drummer Paul Francis had played with both The End and Tucky Buzzard, and Roy Sharland was a former member of the (pre-Uriah Heep) band Spice. A supergroup of sorts!

This week's classic album was celebrating its 40th Birthday: the Who's furious and bombastic LP 'Who's Next', borne of the unrealised 'Lifehouse' rock-opera project abandoned by Pete Townshend following a nervous breakdown. Whilst we can mourn the fact that Lifehouse went unfinished, we can celebrate this amazing LP, which is one of their very best. Here is is a fantastic live version of 'Love Ain't for Keeping', performed at a special concert from 1971 at the Young Vic theatre in London, where the Who tried out some of the Lifehouse songs for the first time.

Some progressive trivia for you: Alan Parsons engineered this album, and all four members of Ambrosia subsequently played on the first Alan Parsons Project LP 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Edgar Alan Poe'. This weeks Classic Rock Album (which kicks off the show each week) played in it's entirety was the wonderful 'Santana III' from 1971. This was the last Santana LP to go to #1 in the USA until Supernatural in 1999! It's also the first LP to feature Neal Schon on guitar, who was just 17 at the time. Of course, he later left Santana (along with keyboardist Gregg Rolie) to form 'Journey' and subject the world to a million bad karaoke versions of 'Don't Stop Believing' as a consequence.

The Classic Rock Album this week, played from beginning to end, was the debut album from the somewhat 'super-group' Widowmaker' (1976) which featured Luther Grosvenor (aka 'Ariel Bender') of Mott the Hoople and Spooky Tooth (guitar), Huw Lloyd Langton of Hawkwind (guitar), Steve Ellis of Love Affair (vocals), Bob Daisley of Chicken Shack (bass) and Paul Nicolls who had played with Lindisfarne (drums). It's a tight little hard rocker, and here's one of our favorites from the LP:

This week's Classic Rock Album, played from beginning to end, was the excellent third LP by Curved Air - 'Phantasmagoria' (1972). It was the last LP from the 'classic' original line-up of the band, and it's somewhat of a masterpiece, particularly the suite that takes up the second side.

This week saw a Classic Rock Album with boogie levels set to 10: Status Quo - 'On the Level' (1975), at which point they were at the top of their game, in terms of quality output and popularity. The Classic Rock Album this week was the magnificent and seminal progressive rock album from Yes - the Yes Album (1971). Their first LP with Steve Howe on guitar, this album saw the Yes sound fully-formed. It's one of their finest albums, and contains many of their most beloved songs. We had a blast listening to it again!

From later that year, here's the first part of the BBC 'Sounding Out' documentary on Yes. You'll notice that Kaye is out of the keyboard stool and Wakeman is in (without a stool, incidentally) solidifying the line up of what, for many, is 'Classic Yes'.
