The Classic Rock Album this week was David Bowie's - Man Who Sold the World. His first REAL album. You know, where he gets REAL. REAL Bowie.

At the time of it's release (in 1970 he was a bit of a joke in the UK), Melody Maker described the album as "surprisingly excellent", whilst the NME described it as "rather hysterical". I've always hated the NME...

After leaving the Yardbirds, Keith Relf worked on a number of interesting projects, one of them being the last Steamhammer album 'Speech' in 1972. Following the dissolution of Steamhammer, Relf recruited Steamhammer's Martin Pugh and Louis Cennamo (who had also been in Renaissance), and Bobby Caldwell (of Captain Beyond and many more) to form Armageddon in 1974. Their self-titled debut was released in 1975, and is a true under-the-radar Classic Rock Album.

For the anoraks and train-spotters (that means super-fans, or nerds, I guess), here's a cool little video about Bobby Caldwell I found online:

This week, we were thrilled that the Silver Apples were coming to Atlanta the following weekend, so we played their wonderful second LP 'Contact' from beginning to end. We also interviewed local sound-smiths and electronic psych collective Recompas (who would be playing in support to the Apples) and had them in to play some records with us. Find recompas (and hear their live set from the Silver Apples show) here.

We went back to London in 1970 with this week's classic rock album, the debut self-titled LP from Juicy Lucy.

In a nutshell, Juicy Lucy sprang from the ashes of the Misunderstood after their relocation to London and their subsequent break-up due to the Vietnam draft and the hassles of immigration law (I can relate!). They were a great band at the point at which their debut came out, and was well recieved in the UK.
They are still going after reforming in recent years: respect!

Stonehenge Playlist - 03-21-08

In a fit of self-indulgence, I took it upon myself to play one of my favorite concept albums of all time this week: Jeff Wayne's the War of the Worlds.

A truly original work of art, this exquisite rock re-telling of H.G. Wells classic novel was a faithful and inspired homage to the spirit of the book, and cast some great names of English music and drama as the characters facing destruction at the hands of the Martians in Victorian England.

Here's a clip of the 2006 live adaptation of the album... Sadly this didn't make it to the states, so I missed it. Justin Hayward looked awesome in Victorian garb.

You may also notice I was beating the Sci-Fi theme home with the following tracks.

This week's Classic Rock Album was one of Genesis' finest moments: the unparalled post-beatles progressive surrealist sci-fi fantasy fairy-tale masterpiece that was 'Foxtrot'. Check out this delicious video clip of the first portion of 'Supper's Ready' live at Shepperton Studios in 1973.

We also celebrated our fourth year at the reins of Atlanta's best classic rock show this week, which means we were playing some of our favorites from previous playlists.

Happy Birthday, Syd!

I just want to take a quick second to note that Syd Barrett's 62nd birthday would have been on Sunday.

If anyone has any suggestions for Syd songs to be played in his memory on next weeks show, let us know in the comments to this post, or via email at stonehenge@wrek.org

"And I borrowed the page from a leopard's cage
and I prowled in the evening sun's glaze
her head lifted high to the light in the sky
the opening dawn on her face..."

Happy Birthday, Syd!
