This week's show was again a no-show for me: I was out of town for work.

The classic rock album was the Doors' 'The Soft Parade', released 40 years ago to the very month. Here's the doors playing with some funny old guys with suits on on the Smothers Brothers Show! Spot the sax player who wasn't part of the house band!

I was AWOL for this show, yet again. I was actually in Bethlehem, PA to see VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR and STEVE HILLAGE at nearfest.

Van Der Graaf were absolutely amazing, by the way: one of the best shows I've seen. In stark contrast, Steve Hillage really disappointed: a half-arsed set, under-rehearsed and indifferently delivered.

Nearfest is pretty cool. It's a bit sterile for this young rocker, as it has more of the atmosphere of a convention than a rock festival, but the guys who run the thing really work their butts off, and it shows (the line-up is consistently remarkable). Plus, any festival that has it's own artisan beer (this year called 'Atom Heart Pilsner') has to be doing something right. It was good beer, too. Apparently, the larger part of Gentle Giant are confirmed for next year as 'Three Friends', so I may well go up there again!

Anyway, D.R. and TVS were laying it down at home with 4 solid hours, all killer, no filler. The classic rock album was Taste, the self-titled debut from Rory Gallagher's band, aka the Irish Cream (not Baileys). As with all the classic rock LP's this year, this one was celebrating the 40th anniversary of its release in June 1969.

Here some great live at the Isle of Wight footage from Taste from 1970:

The Missing Show: 6-12-09

The show this week was me flying solo (with a little help from my friends) but largely due to me being a complete space cadet, the playlist sheet is missing. I did play all of Deep Purple's self-titled 3rd LP, and probably some Hawkwind, but beyond that, we'll all have to wait till the sheet turns up to find out anything further.

The third Deep Purple LP was the last to feature Nick Simper (Bass) and Rod Evans (Vocals), who went on to form Warhorse and Captain Beyond, respectively.

I tried to find some video of DP in 1969 with Rod on vocals, and stumbled across this excellent live instrumental from that year. That might be Evans or Gillan on the fringes of the stage, I can't tell, but with this kind of organ and guitar work, I don't care!

This week, Ben (that's me) was driving to Athens to play a show. However, on the way, I listened to (and thoroughly enjoyed) this show, with the Doctor in residence, and TVS on the wheels of steel.

After more than 30 years on Atlanta's airwaves, Stonehenge continues to bring you the very best in rock music that you won't hear on your radio anywhere else! We pooh-pooh the classic rock radio stations that have just 10 bands and 20 songs on their entire playlists, and we celebrate the great depth and breadth of truly 'classic' rock!

Every week, we begin the show at 8pm with a classic rock album played in it's entirety, and this week was no exception! All this year we've been showcasing the swath of wonderful records released 40 years ago in 1969. This week we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Neil Young's excellent album - 'Everybody Knows This is Nowhere', the first of his albums with Crazy Horse, who Neil had recruited from the LA group the Rockets. It's a really wonderful, loose and creative record, and one that has quietly turned platinum over the years.

Not really any good video of Crazy Horse from 1969 online, so here's CSNY performing 'Down by the River' that very same year, after Neil joined their ranks. Love it or leave it!

Each week we play a Classic Rock Album in it's entirety to begin the Show in style. This year we'll be playing an album that is celebrating it's 40th anniversary release from the very same month. In March 1969 Quicksilver Messenger Service released their second album proper (not including the Revolution movie soundtrack) entitled 'Happy Trails'. It's a stone cold San Francisco Psych classic, and is perhaps the most Bo Diddley album ever (not released by Bo Diddley). Happy Birthday, Happy Trails!

Here's some great live QMS playing Mona from Happy Trails to some lysergically enhanced onlookers.

For this week, the 40th anniversary of Ten Years After's 'Stonedhenge' was observed. This is an interesting LP: as close as these meat 'n' potatatoes blues rockers got to a psychedelic LP, with strange experimental passages and reverbed percussive weirdness alongside freaky blues riffage and mellow acoustic ditties. It's Ten Years After, but not as we know it, and most definitely STONED!

Happy 40th Birthday to the debut album from Led Zeppelin!

Here's some awesome rare stuff from the band on their first all-conquring tour of the USA in 1969:

Stonehenge Playlist 1-2-09... Happy New Year!

As we enter the New Year, the Stonehenge crew has a new resolution we want to share with you: in celebration of the 40th anniversary year of so many wonderful albums released in 1969, each classic rock album this year will be celebrating it's 40th birthday, as close to the week of release as possible! To begin the year in style, we played one of my favorite Fairport Convention LP's, their second LP, and the first with Sandy Denny - 'What we did on our Holidays'.
I feel that Fairport was about as close as the UK got to the Byrds: both bands even had their own indigenous folk music revelations with 'Liege and Leif' and 'Sweetheart of the Rodeo'. 'What we did on our Holidays' is the UK's '5th Dimension'.
There is a dearth of video from this period of the band's history, but here's a great Dylan cover from this excellent LP to sample. Dylan cover? That reminds me of a certain US band...

A classic rock album, egad! 'Thousands on a Raft', by Pete Brown & Piblokto. Pete Brown most famously wrote with Cream, penning the majority of Cream's numbers, including the hits "I Feel Free" and "White Room" with Jack Bruce, and (with Eric Clapton) "Sunshine of Your Love".

Some stupid trivia here: the album title is referring to the popular english snack of Baked Beans on Toast, known in the UK as 'Thousands of Skinheads on a Raft' (see the album cover for an example, as four slices of toast encircle the sinking ship).

No Classic Album this week, due to sports scheduling.

Stonehenge listener! If you'd like to ensure uninterrupted Classic Rock in 2009, you can make your voice heard by getting in touch with WREK to request that Friday evening sports be moved onto the new HD subchannel (WREK Atlanta HD2). You can email general.manager@wrek.org

To make up for the lack of an LP, we continue the tradition of providing you with a conciliatory picture of Slade:

I confess, I have a mobid fascination with Dave Hill's bangs (or 'fringe', as they'd say in Brum).

We went back to London, 1969 for this week's classic album, the self-titled debut from blues-rockers Juicy Lucy, who were formed from the ashes of the Misunderstood and came out punching with a great album of gruff roughness (with horns).

The band is still going under the guidance of original vocalist Ray Owens, and can be found at http://www.juicy-lucy.com/

Here's a great little video of their top 20 UK hit version of 'Who Do You Love' going around on a turntable.
